The thousands of dollars your lawyer wants is small potatoes compared to being locked up for years. If the lawyer wants $10,000 for a charge that might get a ten year sentence, that's $1,000 per year for freedom, $80+ a month, $20 a week. You can pick up cans by the roadside and earn $20 a week. It's money very well spent.
