In 1799, when he was a brilliant 24-year-old painter who had recently appeared on the London scene, Turner was doing some work for the collector and businessman John Julius Angerstein. The latter discovered the young artist in front of a masterpiece he owned, Claude’s Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba (1648). “Turner was awkward, agitated and burst into tears,” as his friend George Jones later told the story, “Mr Angerstein enquired the cause and pressed for an answer, when Turner said passionately: 'Because I shall never be able to paint anything like that picture’.”
